We could have “free” universal healthcare here and “free” college like places in Europe and pay 50+% effective tax rates and everyone outside the wealthy could live in a shitty flat and not be able to afford a car. That sounds fun!

Funding for research breaks down to about 2/3 private and 1/3: public money. There are some nuances, but like we used to say; that's close enough for government work. We also said liars figure and figures lie. Or vice versa.
Oh, and the available Intel indicates It's about the same for Europe.

The main difference is that private research is focused more on immediate practical applications.

Public research historically focuses more on "bluesky" theoretical investigation; which makes innovation and breakthroughs possible..

We have lots of nice things. You want people to pay more taxes so our society can have more “free” things like education and healthcare. I’d like working people to keep more of their money and be about to choose how to spend it on healthcare and education. 🤷🏻‍♂️

My dear aunt, who was widowed young and never remarried, had a major stroke a couple of years ago. She didn’t have much. She had to move out of her rented duplex and into a nice newer assisted living facility. Her doctor bills are all covered, the facility is paid for by her SS checks (which cover a fraction of the actual cost) and she is allowed some spending money to keep each month. It’s not like they get thrown out on the street even in this system.

That’s one kid. Now throw in the incredible rising costs of healthcare. These costs are eating people up anyway, why not just pay it in taxes, and those people in the north shore might have to suffer without their 4th luxury SUV. And hedge fund billionaires might have to sell their 3rd summer home.
