Music: Some have accused Elvis and the music industry of cultural appropriation. The consensus is more nuanced. Exploitation might be a better word. One  called it subtle racism. Try googling

It’s especially prevalent in cooking. Tons of chefs have been accused. Jamie Oliver and Stephanie Izard are two recent examples. Apparently if a white chef cooks a dish that is inspired by a dish of a different culture, but isn’t authentic, it’s “cultural appropriation” to use that word in their description. “Jerk” for Oliver and “Bibimbap” for Izard.

Music: I don’t think I even have to address this. Elvis. Led Zeppelin. The Rolling Stones. The Beatles. I couldn’t list all the examples if I literally worked all day at coming up with examples. It’s possible that some of those claims are legitimate though, especially in the days when black musicians were not provided opportunities.

Izard is illustrative of the conflating of the two. She's been making and selling Asian-inspired food for years. Her entire Little Goat brand is her take on geography-inspired fusion sauces. She has a bluntly Chinese restaurant. No one serious cares. Where she got ripped (without real consequence) was calling something "Bibimbop" that wasn't, and it was her peers - who almost all cook fusion food - who called her out for it. That's exactly who you want policing the art form and how terminology is used, so I'm not sure why that's problematic.

The Inuit one is legit cultural appropriation. The rest of the music examples are BS you hear more from people making counter arguments against a straw man. The issues with Elvis, etc., have always centered more on attribution and plagiarism issues than "white people shouldn't play this because it's black."

Izard’s situation is illustrative of the way the word gets thrown around recklessly and incorrectly. Calling something Bibimbap when it isn’t that is not “cultural appropriation,” it’s “inaccurate.” Those words are not synonymous.

And while the main conversation about those bands has historically been about attribution, there are also accusations of cultural appropriation.
