People seemed to be enjoying themselves at the Laker and Clipper games in LA last night.
Fires while awful, are different than other disasters, for sure.
9.6 million people in LA County. Another 3 million in Orange County. Add in San Diego if you like, pretty soon we're talking a solid 15 million people.
12,000 structures lost in the fires. It's awful, but it's a very tiny percentage of the overall area, and if you are outside the fire areas, you're pretty much personally unaffected. 3 million people lost power in Hurricane Milton, 5 million in Helene.
It feels like the fires are more visceral because since all the infrastructure outside of the fire zone is unaffected, it's easier to get coverage. You can fly a helicopter over the fire and show the disaster unfolding, in a hurricane, once it's in full force at best you'll get some images of a newscaster getting whipped around by the rain.
