Lots of politicians and actors work in the service industries while waiting for better gigs. It is also good training for both, especially for politics.
true, if you want to go into politics, good chance the ladder involves a lot of volunteer work, travel, etc... that isn't compatible with a fulltime gig that her degree might have otherwise provided. A guy I did a little campaign work for in SF was a lawyer in private practice, when he decided to go into politics, he quit the job which was a short term financial hit, and worked legal for some non-profits at a huge pay cut and had some part time gigs and did a lot of political glad handing volunteer work.
Unless you get a silver spoon, that's the path. Often times includes running for rando positions like City College Board etc..
