Yeah, I'm definitely not disparaging them, or anyone else. It's definitely good money if you can get it. It's just that once you get sick, you are very much expendable. Hell, you're pretty much an enemy to the company at that point.
Growing up around Peoria, when Cat was super huge, it was pretty much all blue collar. I know how it works. One thing Cat did, back in the day, they covered health care 100%. Their insurance was the best around. Those jobs were coveted and very hard to get. And they paid like 28-35 dollars per hour back in the 80s. That's a fuckton of money.
But those dudes got broke down. It's hard fucking work, spending 10-12 hours under a tractor welding or doing any number of fucked up things you have to do. And when your body breaks, you get shitcanned and replaced.
My wife's dad worked for Cat for 30 years. Went through strikes. One time they went on strike over Christmas, 100 dollars a week in strike pay. It's tough. I won't disparage any of those dudes at all.
