Dealing with toxic contamination at old industrial sites has aways been a challenge and often requires city-state collaboration.  Back in the day, the City of Chicago had an environmental department that was separate from the public health department.  Johnson should consider going back to that approach, given the complexity of environmental issues facing a large city like Chicago.

Don't disagree. But it took Pritzker, who now appears to have added Co-Mayor to his Governor job title, to slow this down before any of the migrants get there get sick, and sue the City. These idiots didn't even share the report with the Governor's office before telling reporters they needed to FOIA it. Just no clue in how things works as Custard and Ald. Jeanette Taylor noted.

Poor communications and execution, yes.  Not buying the part that Johnson doesn't know how the system works.

It's the job of his public health director to make sure proper environmental protocols are being followed.  This is not some new issue.  The city has been working with the state for the past 30 years on these types of site remediation projects.

And the consultant's report wouldn't go to the governor's office first.  It was given to the state environmental agency, which flagged the issue and brought it to the attention of Pritzker. 

The state has a group of engineering and scientific staff that review site assessments all the time to help local governments return abandoned industrial properties to productive reuse.

The ball is in Johnson's court to determine how to improve accountability and performance from his staff.  We will see how he responds.

Well, that is quite the positive spin. Everyone should have known this was going to be an issue when it was disclosed that remediation, on the city's part, was part of the deal.

It's normally part of the deal for the city to take the lead on these types of projects.  The city has it's own pot of money for site assessment and remediation activities, plus it can tap into state and federal grant programs.

Most of these sites are abandoned or underutilized and have become a blight on nearby communities.  They include gas stations, metal platers, old gas works, paint manufacturers, drycleaners, print shops, chemical storage and steel fabricators.

It's in the economic interest of the local government and state to remediate the sites and put them back into productive uses, such as commercial districts and business parks. 

If the landowner is still viable, the city and state will work to recover the cleanup costs, but that's not typical for most of these sites.
