Who is Blackistone? I thought someone else reached out to the tribe in response to all the hullabaloo over the Zombie Scabspin article on The Twitter (shocking).
From the article Alum, the Braves fan, posted ....
"A young Chiefs fan made headlines this past weekend because he attended the team's game with his face painted half red and half black. He was also wearing a Native headdress."
The child's parents said his attire for the Chiefs-Raiders game was OK because his grandfather is a tribal council member for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.
Nope, he did not make headlines because of the black and red face paint. He made the headlines because of Deadspin, the black face depiction and the story.
And ...
"With that said, longtime journalist Kevin Blackistone decided to ask the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians about this situation."
Kevin Blackistone is a co-producer of Imagining the Indian, The fight against Native American mascoting.
He did a screening at NU on Nov 7.
You must have missed it.
He was given a statement from the Tribal CHairman that ended with 'as a federally recognized tribe .........." which hardly sounds like a tribal policy that was begun today.
He preceeded that by saying that decisions made by individuals are their own.
Holden's Dad contacted tribal members, some of whom apparently had no issues with Holden's attire for the game.
Hopefully, the 9 year old Native American can sue and get back to being a kid again.
