What is the functional difference between Joe and Anne getting in the way of Tom and Mary, or a company?

If prices are low, that void will be filled. Just because this seems more efficient doesn't change that fact. When you get down to it, these companies represent shareholders named Joe and Anne.

OMG did I just hear “corporations are people?”

I tend to view it as I work for me, but point taken.

I make sure to stick it to “The Man” as much as possible.

And you're a communist. Go figure

I didn't say I was not a fan of Pottersville....seems a hell of a lot more fun than Bedford Falls.

I would have expected this comment to be flip flopped in terms of author/recipient.

I don't think the commies would be big fans of venture capitalists buy up homes (unless the commies themselves were the investors).

Apparently destroying the nuclear family of the poors was not enough for you?Well, Moynihan has been dead for awhile, hasn't he?

I probably should have included properly designed as well. There is a tendency to use programs to control behavior.

Instead of a simple reverse tax scheme, we wound up with ADC, AFDC, and Public Housing projects. To stay medical eligible, they had to have more kids. Food and housing vouchers have been a positive change in the right direction. Still, public aid workers are quasi social workers and the whole system is designed to keep the poor barely  functional.

The better system is a guaranteed minimum livable income funded by advance refundable tax credits. That replaces TanF, SNAP,. Possibly phase out housing subsidies? Go to universal healthcare. Another topic.
Poor people can then earn more without losing medical and the income subsidy is phased out.

Then let social workers deal with homelessness -- unhousedness? --, drug addiction, alcoholism, foster children, domestic violence

I temporarily housed a  wayward youth or two once upon a time. Unpaid, unofficial role. What a mess that system is. One came from a group home that was a burglary ring.

I am not sure I agree with the thesis that single family homes should not be part of the rental stock

They are scooping up entry level homes, renovating them, then renting them to an upscale market. It's not rocket surgery. This has a bad effect on home ownership.

The companies doing this say young, upscale families don't care about home ownership and don't want to buy a fixer upper. They would rather rent an already fixed up home.

What makes you think they can get it right this time? Not saying that is a reason to stop trying. Just would be nice if non-profits would step up instead of hording cash for their executives.

I actually do know of a group that provides services and housing for the homeless. They do a good job, but they do not deal with the people who refuse to take their meds. Not equipped to handle them.

Wall Street is not interested in housing America and building neighborhoods. Only profits.

Isn't that true of American Capitalism across the board? They are only interested in the needs of the public to the extent free market competition or government action forces their hands. Between cronyism and monopoly-ism, free markets are mostly something Republicans talk about.

So "Entry level home" means "a larger home but dilapidated" - not "A new, smaller home"

There is always hope. However, that is offset by ignorance, greed, and hatred.

I don't have confidence the government will get it right. I have a lot less confidence in Republicans than Democrats. The Republican solution is blame the unemployed, sick, poor, and homeless.

Thats a pretty broad brushstroke.  Chicago has some very good non-profits providing services to the homeless.  Here's just a few:
