That's a really bent headline when the increase has brought the number up to a whopping 38%

The funny part is that it's often self-defeating. They want religious people who are against abortion, but the fastest growing segment of religious people who are against abortion are latino immigrants, who they are also against.

"At the same time, the percentage saying their social views are very liberal or liberal has dipped to 29% from 34% in each of the past two years,"

What’s the methodology here?  Just asking “are your social views liberal or conservative”? What views do you think they mean?

If we’re celebrating an uptick in transphobia and anti-choice stuff then great - congrats I guess, but history has literally not once looked back kindly on that sort of thing, and obviously won’t this time either.

I don’t really have that much of an issue with real by-the-definition conservatism but that isn’t represented by any party in this country.  The GOP consistently spends more than the Dems when they have the ability to.  Typically “conservative” has become shorthand for nationalism and transphobia in America these days, so it’s hard to know what the poll even means

Way to call it out!

You’re trying to mock me, but yes - this is what happens when people who call out bigotry are treated worse than the people advocating for it.  Assuming the “conservative views” people mean are like, I don’t think women should have a choice to have an abortion and I don’t want trans people around my kids.  Maybe they don’t, but there’s no way to know.  Frankly I'm not too sure what the other conservative hot button social issues are.  Immigration, I guess?

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that in a culture where half the country believes being an open transphobe is virtuous that opinions against trans people are going up.  That’s what happens when people who know better spend all their time arguing with the people calling bigotry out and no time calling the open bigots out.  Conservatives jumped all over that one trans mass shooter to paint trans people as dangerous, but obviously don't want to do that with the huge, huge, huge majority of those events.  Not a coincidence.

You reap what you sow, and if enough people truly believe it’s worse to call out bigotry than be a bigot, then you will sow an openly bigoted society.  That isn't what I want for America, personally, but it's obviously something American conservatives have been fighting for for a few hundred years now.  It's pretty frustrating to still be fighting the "we should treat people like people" fight in 2023, but here we are.

Social Conservatism in U.S. Highest in About a Decade

"The shift is mostly due to increasing social conservatism among Republicans, at a time when social issues such as transgender rights, abortion and other hot-button concerns are prominent in the national public debate."

Makes sense to me.

Which phone book or similar listing of residents would you like me to start with?

I found the article's failure to define the terms to be lacking. I wonder if the pollsters even defined the terms when polling the participants.

I don't know if there is "celebrating," as opposed to an effort to take the temperature, so to speak,  of the populace.

Still doesn't get it. Figures.

You would have thought people would have learned that Hilary calling people "undesirables" is not a way to win people over.

Lol the world never gets more conservative over the long-haul. 2,000 years of history tells us this. Blips in the radar, possibly bad polling.
"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

I’d be willing to bet it’s poor polling. It’s so incredibly easy to manipulate poll results.

Do you think Anheuser-Busch agrees right now?
