Give it a few weeks.
These guys got something they like, perhaps. But when the death toll hits 500, and we go over how badly they botched getting people out of the area, he's gonna have tougher and tougher questions.
DeSantis created a monster. He spent two years creating a distrust of the Government, and "mandates bad", then waited far too long to issue a mandatory evacuation that few listened to because "mandates bad".
That's a simple situation where DeSantis and the local officials just totally screwed up and killed a bunch of people for no good reason. When a fire sniffs Northern California, we get the hell out. With Kincade, the fire was burning in the hills on Thursday, they said "there is a wind event on Sunday that will blow the fire South". Everyone left the North County. The fire never got close to Healdsburg proper, but people were gone. It hit Windsor and we didn't think it was going to go there, but no lives were threatened because people were gone.
And even in a fire, if you decide to be buckaroo banzai and ignore the orders and stay home to "protect your house", you can in theory actually succeed if you build up a crazy sprinkler system. No amount of sandbags would save Fort Meyers Beach.
This is leadership. Kincade evac order was for 190,000 people. Zero fatalities. And yes, if you don't evacuate, fire can be deadly, Tubbs had 22 deaths, because unlike Kincade - or Ian - the fire started at 11:30 PM and was burning homes within an hour while people were asleep.
