I mean fucking up the post office is kind of a presidential rite of passage isn't it?
Can you name one?

President Obama would allow the cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service to scrap Saturday delivery and delay some required healthcare payments, under proposals in the White House's 2015 budget.

----

Namely, the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006.

Passed by a Republican-led Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush, the PAEA gave the Postal Service new accounting and funding rules for its retiree pension and health benefits. Up until 2006, the USPS funded those obligations on a pay-as-you-go-basis, pulling out of its pension fund and adding to it as retirees' costs came in. But the PAEA required the Postal Service to calculate all of its likely pension costs over the next 75 years, and then sock away enough money between 2007 and 2016 to cover most of them.

---

WASHINGTON -- President Reagan asked Congress Monday to cut the Postal Service subsidy for nonprofit mail to $500 million, a decrease of $119 million.

If Person A negligently cuts a victim's hand off, Person B does a half-assed job bandaging it, and Person C shoots the victim point-blank in the head, who killed the victim?

The long time postmaster at my local PO told me several years ago that for all intents and purposes the USPS has been a cash cow for Congress. I’m not sure why this even came up but her argument was pretty convincing.

They also had official USPS propaganda in the lobby explaining how the postal service is not taxpayer funded and was broke because the federal government had broken it. It was probably right around the same timeframe as the comments MN posted took place.

I didn’t give it much thought at the time but that conversation keeps popping into my head as these USPS debates rage.

A quick google search for USPS Congress Cash Cow will provide all the archived information from reputable sources that anyone could ever want.

Of course they're not a money maker.  It was never the intent.  They're required to provide services to the entire country.  Try closing an office in Bumfuck OK or any other rural area that's a cash drain, and you'll incur the wrath of flyover nation.  The expectation that USPS should be profitable while tying one hand behind their back is doomed to fail.  It's a government program for good reason.

Are you suggesting that what is happening now with the USPS has to do with "costs," when Trump had 3 years to do "this", or with mail in voting? I am going to suggest Trump did not give a rat's ass about the USPS costs (other than sticking it to Amazon and Bezos) until mail in voting became an issue.

I’m at the PO almost every week day. I mail lots of stuff. In the past month or so I believe I’ve had more things show up late, disappear, get misdirected, etc than the rest of my entire life.

A few weeks ago on a Monday I sent out some important documents (and a $4740 money order) to Missouri via priority mail. It moved normally for two days then got stuck in KC for a week.

Obviously concerned, I went into my local PO from which it was mailed and they were eventually able to get ahold of someone out there. Lo and behold the next day it started moving again and was finally delivered the next Friday.

I felt like a kid telling the teacher his dog at his homework trying to explain that this money that was supposed to be there in 2 days was literally lost in the mail.

I’m hoping you were sending a check in the mail because your Missouri connection is back asswards.

I’m even doing closing costs on a refi via Venmo

Postal money order or cash in hand were the only payment options. If it wasn’t something hard to find and even more difficult to acquire, I would have done business elsewhere. It was in SWMO FWIW.

We’re these preceded by the flooding we saw last year?

We are in day 3 of 100+ degree heat - which would be VERY unusual to start with - but now we just had a 2 hour dry lightning storm the likes of which I have never seen, Colorado and Illinois get plenty of lightning and thunder so I’ve seen plenty.

This was constant uninterrupted thunder for two hours with hundreds of strikes.

Day 3 and of 100 degree heat would be unusual- we are supposed to have 7 more days

In 27 years in NorCal I have seen lightning maybe 3 times and all were trivial storms

Minnesota averages 1-2 derechos a year, and have occurred following drought years.

Maybe you're AOTC on NOAA.

https://www.spc.noaa.gov/misc/AbtDerechos/derechofaq.htm

How might climate change affect derecho frequency and distribution?
The short answer is: No one can be sure. A warmer planet at first glance would appear to be more conducive to the development of the intense thunderstorms that comprise derecho-producing convective systems. But thunderstorm updrafts require the presence of strong vertical temperature gradients; any warming occurring at the surface likely also would occur aloft. Thus, the net change in instability due to thermal changes likely would be minimal. And, although a warmer environment implies greater atmospheric moisture content and conditional instability (instability related to the release of latent heat during condensation), all other factors remaining equal, the increased moisture likely also would yield more widespread low-level cloud cover. Such cloudiness would negatively impact storm initiation and derecho development. What is more certain is that the band of enhanced upper-level flow that encircles the planet --- the jet stream --- would contract poleward in a warmer world. Because derechos tend to form on the equatorward side of the jet stream along the northern fringes of warm high pressure ("fair weather") systems, it is reasonable to conclude that the corridors of maximum derecho frequency would shift poleward with global warming.
