I watched most of Pence’s briefing yesterday, and good lord, what a dolt. He went through a list of things people can do to be safe, and didn’t list “wear a mask.” A reporter called him on it in questioning, and he still refused to say people should wear a mask. Instead, he said some bullshit about listening to local authorities.

The complete dereliction of duty by this administration is shameful. They have taken one of the most important safety protocols you can possibly follow and made it into a political issue, because they rightly think that a high percentage of Americans are selfish children they can exploit for votes.

I thought this ruling would go in the opposite direction.  Hard to figure Roberts.  Is he still casting about for the right set of “special circumstances” to dismantle Roe v. Wade?   Or maybe he’s not the warrior on social issues that conservatives had expected, or liberals had feared.

Establishment conservatives know they can't change abortion law.

If they did, the papists would move on to a next agenda item. All the remaining agenda items = liberal social programs.

If the GOP wants rich people to stay rich, they need to keep dangling the abortion carrot, but never actually grab it.

Roberts is judicially conservative in a way Thomas and Alito are not.  He just signaled that he doesn't want appeals where there's a recent case on point solely because the balance of the Supreme Court has shifted slightly.

He still might vote to overturn Roe if the right case is brought, but it will need to be a very narrow and calculated fact set. Overcoming objections, as salespeople call it.

Rob is also right. They lose Roe the Catholics go hard after the death penalty, immigration, etc.

I don't disagree that Roberts wants to suppress the impulse, among wingnuts, to relitigate an issue whenever a new justice joins the court.

The verbal jujitsu required to disagree with one's own recent opinion was, in this case, exactly the kind of high comedy I went to law school for.

I don't see due respect for precedent as funny or even problematic.  I think there is both a term and logical reason for this.
