I usually think of whataboutism as being stuff like this:

Not sure that debating coverage between shootings committed by white people versus minorities is the same thing. I think there’s at least some evidence that these incidences are reported differently.

There’s at least one poster here who has repeatedly argued that suppressing reports of minority/illegal immigrant violent crime is a good thing.

Well, as you note, this example didn't involve the criminal justice system, so not sure it is an apt comparison. Ironically, a stupid, potentially libelous, opinion piece on zombie scab Deadspin may be a good example why the general practice is in place.

Suppose two adult humans are arrested for robbing a liquor store at gun point. How much biographical / demographic data about the perpetrators should the media release? Name, age, and gender only?

Should they include their race or ethnicity, religion, political affiliations, fraternal memberships, nationality, immigration status, sexual orientation, any disabilities, level of education, income, credit rating, phone number, address, other?

Suppose they are arrested for a so-called hate crime,  terrorist attack,  mass shooting, or politically motivated crime? Does that make a difference?

How much information about the kid should the media release ?
How many media members should come to the defense of Carron Phillips ?

During the wtf is the media doing calling the riots of 2020 "mostly peaceful" when the Minneapolis 3rd precinct police headquarters was burned down, the defund the police and all cops are bad groups were in their heyday.

Now, 2 policemen and a first responder are gunned down and the local media wants to tell us all about the alleged shooter instead of their role in the defund the police and all cops are bad story line.

That would obviously be wrong.

I see nothing wrong with reporting crimes committed by illegals. Just  no need to bring immigration status up unless it's relevant.
