Lowell wants to avoid a closed door deposition because Hunter's business partner, Eric Schwerin, has a closed door deposition several days later. Any testimony in the 2 depositions that is at odds could be subject to scrutiny.

A deposition is an entirely different matter than a public appearance before a Congressional committee and Jamie Raskin, who is on the committee, knows full well that a closed door deposition is normal procedure. If a public appearance before a committee follows, so be it.

Lowell wants a public hearing to avoid Hunter being questioned by attorneys. It's an attempt to avoid not appearing in a closed door deposition before the committee and a possible resulting contempt charge. A charge Garland would be obligated to pursue.
