Cash free bail is one that people who want it really botched. The thought that a higher bail amount makes it more likely that you'll get an appearance or that the offender won't do anything while out on bail is just flat out false. Someone who is poor, won't make bail. Someone who is rich, might just skip the country and say "keep your 20k"

If someone is a flight risk or dangerous - they stay in jail. Otherwise, they can go pending trial. Cash bail is just way to dole out extra punishment to "those people" who can't afford bail. But punishing "those people" is popular with a lot of people.

However, it ignores a) that boneheaded State's Attorneys like Kim Foxx will not push for dangerous people to be held, b) other State's Attorneys will now have to do some work now to keep people behind bars, and c) a few people (want to?) read the law as requiring people currently behind bars to be set free and to not allowing others to be held at all based on their charges.

A bad state's attorney should not be mitigated by bad policy.

Besides being used to hold poor defendants in jail pending trial; the corrupt cash bail system is also used to collect fines, court fees, and debts. Some of those whining might have a vested interest.

The big lies are that eliminating cash bail = automatic release and "that a higher bail amount makes it more likely that you'll get an appearance or that the offender won't do anything while out on bail"
