Mainstream religions these days seem to consist largely of praying to an external deity for material blessings. It appears the traditional 7 deadly sins are pretty much treated as virtues in practice.
The mind can also be compared to a garden. The so-called deadly sins, or the kleshas of Buddhism. would be the weeds. The cardinal virtues of Christianity or 10 paramittas of Buddhidm are the flowers and fruit. Traditional Buddhist practices included not only blocking and letting go of cognates of the deadly sins, but also cultivation of virtues, as antidotes.
People are people. Modern lay buddhists in buddhist countries are more apt to pray to Amida, Bodai/Putai, or Kuanyin for blessings than practice something like samatha-vipassana. Buddhist clergy largely earn donations doing blessing rituals for the laity. Asian buddhism also carries a lot of cultural baggage unique to each host country.
Still, there is some serious general interest in the cultivative, mindfulness, and contemplative practices.
