Trump is similar to Bill Clinton in that both inoculated / immunized themselves from political scandal by counter attacking and successfully framing themselves as victims of evil political conspiracies.

Bill Clinton largely stayed out of the fray and relied on third party attack dogs; while personally focusing on his economic successes. Note that the attack dogs were content with smear campaigns.

While Trump has been aided by right media, he has been his own lead attack dog..Trump has also escalated beyond smear campaigns, by attempting to prosecute his political enemies.
