Who needs qualified experts when you have conspiracy theorists dwelling in their parents' basements?

Experts can't be bought off as easily as anyone else, as that would compromise their expertise. An occasional expert will be bought, but that doesn't affect a broad consensus.

I have no idea how Jobu having been possibly mistaken about something or other is relevant to the discussion.

My point is that we shouldn’t always think those are infallible. Sometimes the conspiracy basement dwellers are right. Moreso lately than ever, it seems. I think the AI overviews make an attempt to display some objectivity, but saying they reliably present a cogent consensus might be a bit of a stretch. Maybe some (or even most) of the time, but not always.

Again, the other day I looked up a band discography, and it was wildly inaccurate. Why was it inaccurate? Because the website it pulled the primary info from was wrong. I clicked on the link and saw it myself. It’s just spitting out a summary of what it scrapes from websites published by biased and flawed humans.

I mentioned Jobu because he kept picking fights with me about agricultural related topics that he seemed to have some knowledge of,  but was missing parts of the big picture. Since we are talking about “experts” I could definitely be considered one in the ag field. I am on the leadership team for an ag tech company that is backed by two of the three biggest investors in the space. I have a really good feeling on what’s happening in the industry. I’m not going to argue with the lawyers here about law, or with Tempo about the nuances of successful Uber drivers, but I do know my shit when it comes to the industry I’ve been in my entire career.

Just off the top of my head, he called me a liar for saying I bought eggs and milk for two dollars each. I then posted the receipts because I just happened to still have them, and I was accused of using AI. A couple of weeks later he admitted that he had bought eggs and milk for around two dollars. Like my AI summary from another thread mentioned, price reductions in blue states take longer. Shocking.

He also told me that it was bullshit that I said glyphosate was a problem in our food supply. He went on to incorrectly state that it fully breaks down and doesn’t stay in the soil or water or in our food. None of those things are true. It is in our food, it is in our water, it is in our soil, it is in our bodies, and it is an endocrine disruptor that seems to cause a lot of other problems as well. I’m old enough to remember when the anti GOP folks hated Monsanto. Weird.

Earlier in the fall he was up in arms that Trump had ruined the price of soybeans. However, they were basically the exact same price as the the year before when Biden was in office. That just happened to be the exact same time that the mainstream media and everyone’s algorithm was blowing up with Trump fear porn regarding ag commodity prices. The media made it sound like low prices were new but the plain truth is that they really started tanking in late 2023 and have been in the tank ever since. This isn’t be shitposting or making shit up, it’s easily verifiable via a quick google search. The prices are actually better now than they were late in Biden’s term. Trade has been restored with China on soybeans. But no one wants to talk about that. Weird, huh? The best part about the articles? I work with literally hundreds of farmers, their distributors, industry professionals, etc. VERY few of them are anti-Trump. That’s how I know these are hit pieces. They find one of two and try to paint a picture that Trump’s base is turning on him. I have come across exactly ONE farmer in my work life that has spoken out about the tariffs and that was before the deal was made on beans and the checks were cut for the farm aid bill. One. They just aren’t turning on him, so stop the fever dream.

The other day I commented factually on an article PAMan posted about the Trump farm payment (that Custard ahead of the curve as usual mentioned as happening before the first of the year clear back in September, check me) Jobu lost his fucking mind and went on a manic posting spree in every forum on the board.  But we’ve all known him long enough to know that that’s nothing that’s particularly new.

He had something in his mind that he believed in, I kept challenging him on it with facts, and he couldn’t handle it. He wanted to believe what he wanted to believe and when I presented facts in opposition of what he believed, he lost his fucking mind. That’s what I was getting at.

Useful info on historical inflation.

Carter gets unfairly blamed. He actually appointed the Fed Chairman that curbed it. That cycle seems to have began on LBJ's watch after the JFK tac cuts. Got out of control on Nixon's watch. Ended on Reagan's watch.

The post pandemic inflation appears to have lasted 3 years and ended in 2024.

The retaliatory tariffs did hurt bean prices for a couple of years. The admin did a relief payment similar to what they just did that I remember people blasting for being too much. A trade deal was later signed and the markets saw a huge run up as speculator money flowed into commodities during the pandemic.

AI Overview

During Donald Trump's first term, U.S. soybean prices plummeted due to his trade war with China, which imposed retaliatory tariffs, causing massive losses for farmers and a huge drop in exports, leading to significant government aid programs (Market Facilitation Program) to cushion the blow, though farmers often felt the bailouts didn't fully cover their losses, shifting market share to South America.

Key Impacts on Soybean Prices & Farmers:

Tariff Implementation (2018): China, the largest U.S. soybean buyer, retaliated against U.S. tariffs by placing its own duties on American soybeans, causing immediate price drops.

Price Decline: Soybean prices fell significantly below production costs, with some farmers losing substantial amounts, hurting profits and leading to financial strain.

Export Collapse: U.S. soybean exports to China dropped drastically (by 77%), with soybeans accounting for the vast majority of lost agricultural export value.

Market Shift: South American producers, especially Brazil, gained significant market share in China, a trend that continued after the initial trade war.

Government Aid: The Trump administration provided billions in aid (Market Facilitation Program) to farmers to offset losses, but many felt it wasn't enough to make them whole.

In Summary: Trump's trade policies created significant volatility and financial hardship for soybean farmers, making soybeans a central point in the broader U.S.-China trade dispute, necessitating large-scale government interventions to support the sector.

I think we can all stipulate that AI isn't going to yield a broad consensus of experts on a topic if there is no broad consensus of experts to be had.

I will not sripulate to this unless it incorporates my thoughts published here.

“If expert opinions don’t agree with my own, it’s probably because those people were paid off.” - the modern “conservative”
"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

This is just beyond farcical. Easily the most vain motherfucker imaginable. No doubt Mn, Judy, and Custard approve and will tell us we have TDS.
