I'd much more prefer the cops beating the living fuck out of the smokers personally. But I'll take that as opposed to wasteful government spending like keeping 3/4 empty schools open, giving money to National Palestinian Radio so guys like Ken Burns can get rich filming photographs, or spending it on California wild fire control, any day of the week.
Lemmy smoked on the L....

AI Overview

Alternative approaches:
Some argue that focusing on social programs, poverty reduction, and mental health services can be more effective in preventing crime in the long run.

Historical context:
Some critics argue that the origins of policing in the US are rooted in maintaining social order and protecting property rather than preventing crime.

It was interesting watching the Mayor and Chief of PD speak - they mentioned things like "Community Outreach". I can just see them assigning the Nat Guard guys to go play hoops with black teenagers. That ought to be amusing in many ways.

I agree Nichi, let's reopen the loony bins and get the homeless junkies and crazies off the streets. They certainly are not utilizing the available services (because they are junkies and/or crazy).

I say we buy every homeless guy in DC a one way bus ticket to Mn's neighborhood. The look on Mn's face as Trump gets on TV to say he's "cleaned up DC!"

5. Special case — National Guard

The National Guard is usually deployed during disasters or civil unrest, not for routine policing.

Their presence can immediately suppress looting or rioting, but they are not trained for day-to-day community crime prevention in the same way police are.

Those guardsmen who signed up expecting to be carrying around cases of water bottles to grateful people after a hurricane are just gonna LOVE going to drug dens with hopped up lunatics.

I'd love to have a cop or National GuardsMAN patrolling the park where I take the PassiveDog. Some dude was pissing on a tree right by the street as people were walking right by him with their dogs today!

You have it tough. People smoking on the L; taking a leak on trees in the park. No wonder you are pining for a police state.

Except you are looking at committing a permanent occupation force. If not, the temporary muggings and murders resume as soon as the beefed up police presence is gone. Plus, a long term heavy police presence only further alienates the local community.

Sadly, your Party is unwilling to commit the resources needed to address the underlying causes of urban crime. They won't even admit to the underlying causes.
If DC was a state it would have the highest state homicide rate.

well then, let's save Louisiana the pain and suffering of being the state with the highest homicide rate, by making DC a State.

What say you?

Yeah, crickets.

DC is at 29.3

St Louis Missouri is 66.07

Your comparison gets a 15 yard penalty flag. Cities by their nature, have higher homicide rates than rural Wyoming, because well, in rural Wyoming there's nobody else to shoot at. You are comparing "States" to a "City".

Note that the 6th worst city is also in Missouri. But see, in Osage Beach, they are lovers not murderers, girls get out of high school, go across the street to the strip club, meet a man, then go next door to the church and get married. So the Missouri crime rate is lowered by the saintly folks in Osage.

DC is also an urban area. Your Party has no interest in discussing the actual causes of urban violence.

We should keep in mind that law enforcement in DC operates differently because it is a federal territory, not a state. The District Attorney handles misdemeanors, while the DOJ prosecutes serious crimes, all in federal courts.

Less than a half of cases referred by the Metropolitan Police are prosecuted by the DOJ, which has caused frustration among residents for years. Due to a lack of congressional representation, DC residents have limited options to address this issue.

Some believe that crime reduction in DC would require the DOJ to prosecute more cases from MPD arrests, but current policies have not reflected this approach.

I feel safer in SF than I would in say, rural Kentucky.
Rand Paul is a US Senator, he got his ass kicked in Kentucky, but never in DC.

Facts. No bike lanes in rural Kentucky and no fucks given when you don’t let them pass when you’re doing 22 in 65.

While I agree with you that Disneyland is a dystopian hellscape - I'm not really sure that explains the lower tourism numbers in Yosemite. Maybe Newsom needed to stop Alex Honnold from free soloing El Capitan and scaring the shit out of everyone. And how does California doing so explain the cratering numbers at Disney World in Orlando?

The worst tourism decline in the US happening right now? Las Vegas, and it's not even close.
Presumably the fault of their Governor - former Clark County Sheriff, Republican Governor Joe Lombardo.
In 2024, Vegas had rebounded to pre-covid levels of tourism, this year it's down double digits and dropping.

Vegas has turned into an LA/SF like shithole where everything is overpriced and freaks and tweakers dominate the landscape. It’s dirty and unsafe. Not even remotely the same place it was before Covid. Can’t even count how many people I have heard say in the last year or two that they’ll never go back. It certainly no longer appeals to the relatively conservative Asian families that used to pour in there and spend money like crazy.

Disney World? Go woke, go broke!

Yosemite? No one can get there because the whole state is on fire due to chronic decades long mismanagement of water resources and vegetation. Those that could still get there by car can’t afford the gas, and the Tesla owners had their cars burned by radical leftists. The rich Bay Area folks like you just climb El Capitan on their Oculus.

Oh, it's the DC policies that may be the problem ?

Ray has been beating the drum for an alternative approach to policing inner cities for years. I’m all for trying different things but I’d also like to see some successful examples in crime ridden American inner cities where actual police presence was reduced and replaced with social programs and these other things he preaches.

How much revenue does Deep Blue Democrat Chicago raise in a year? Why can’t they do anything about Garfield Park or Back of the Yards? Why are people pissing on trees at PAMan’s park?!?!

I’m kind of tired of the left blaming everything on the system and the policies and history and the police and economics and completely glossing over obvious deeply ingrained generational cultural and other issues. It’s so eye roll generic.

25 years ago they tore the projects down and moved a bunch of those people downstate with section 8 vouchers. Crime, homelessness, teenage pregnancy, drug use, poverty, etc all spiked and have remained elevated ever since. Nothing is changing for these people even when the state gives them housing and EBT and other support.

In general, they aren’t breaking the cycle. They aren’t going to college and getting better jobs. They aren’t getting off drugs and making a positive impact on society. Not even the deepest Blue states in the country. What’s missing?
