meh. My sister in law just retired, after being an instructor at UIUC for decades. She's had a dignified life, owned a small house in Champaign, but definitely on the modest side.

The only people making bank are either

1) CS/EE professors with lucrative consulting gigs not financed by the school
2) Bielema and Underwood
3) Will Riley, KJ, Pat Bryant

They are definitely being coddled a bit. When I go on vacation I stay in hotels that only wish they were as nice as Illinois Street Residence hall. Alpha Sigs was a giant dumpster fire when I was there, now it's been gutted and cleaned up, nary a rat or cockroach to be found. 36 E Chalmers - I drove by, it was new construction when we lived there, but very modest, felt fancy to us. These days it's surrounded by buildings that put it to shame. Before even getting into those luxury apartments on 6th Street. Illini Tower is probably slated for demolition, back in the day if you found out someone lived in IT it mean they were some richie rich person.

Sometimes, in fact, all the time, you need to read the source documents AI relies upon. You would be shocked how often the AI summary is either wrong or takes things out of context. Nonetheless, I never said anything was the primary driver of anything, but even your AI summary agrees that admin and staffing costs are a factor in riding costs.

The real issue is that the AI doesn't really have the root capability to verify the sources. If someone floods the zone with something incorrect, it can become the "truth".

It can determine that the New England Journal of Medicine is cited more often, and find articles that tout that Journal as being well regarded and researched, but if you flood the zone with articles that cite some crackpot fake article, eventually the AI will take that as truth. It's no different than a human - whatever they see the most of, they believe.

I don't see how it's "full metal murph" to place the prima facie case that
1) if a University has X slots and
2) Some of those slots are filled with foreign students that
3) some US Citizens who want to go to said University won't be able to, because the cut line is higher and
4) if #2 is a function of the University trying to get more money from foreign students who pay full freight at
5) a higher rate of tuition - then funding reductions from the state means fewer domestic students getting in.
