Sánchez ...  rejected Trump’s assertion that  levies are “reciprocal,” describing them instead as “an excuse to punish countries, apply sterile protectionism, and raise revenue to try to mitigate a deficit caused by questionable fiscal policy.”

Raising taxes on the wrong people. Who eventually won't pay it as they reduce purchases. It's sort of like a gas tax hike, which I protest by.. not buying gas.

This round of tariffs is basically a consumption tax. Buy American!

Coffee and chocolate can only be produced in very small areas of the US, representing roughly 5% of US consumption

Oh no how will we ever survive the small increase in the cost of these products?

We miss one of the big points of the tariffs. The tariffs do not appear to be based on actual trade barriers.  They are designed to gain power and make money for Trump.

Trump can give exemptions to any company or sector he likes on the parts they import.  Any company that gives him money, any company that bends the knee and praises him, or any company that he, his family, or his buddies can invest in to get a competitive advantage.

It's just another racketeering scheme to make money and force people to grovel.  Remember, everything is transactional for Trump.

Other countries aren't squealing. They are stating facts and taking action.

Laura Loomer, who has gained some sort of D list notoriety as a right wing bomb thrower, just went to the Oval Office and told Trump to fire 12 people in the National Security office because she thinks they are disloyal to Trump. So he hired them.

Not... normal...

They sure are squealing. The “disrupt world trade” narrative everyone is parroting is just a cover for the fact that they no longer have unfettered access to our consumer market or enjoying trade deficits and they are big mad about it.

I’d be a lot more concerned if all these countries were like, “meh” because that would mean what we are doing isn’t meaningful.

The sanest explaination I've seen for the tariffs is Trump wanted big splashy tarriffs on the 2nd.  And he was going to tout them as "reciprocal".  But in order to computate the cost of every kind of trade barrier a country might have would take weeks if not months.  So...they coughed up this stupid short cut of trade deficit/imports.

If tariffs are so bad for the home country, why are they all retaliating by raising tariffs instead of dropping them?
