Liberal populism sucks too, just not as bad.

There is truth and falsehood; right wrong. Those aren't determined by popular vote.

PS that border security bill was garbage. Biden and the Border Czar had all the tools at their disposal to rein in the mass illegal immigration but refused to do anything until they realized it was a big threat to their chances of staying in power.

The only tool needed is massive fines for anyone hiring illegal immigrants. No jobs, no illegal immigrants. QED

But that would penalize white people for hiring illegals, not illegals for working those jobs.

The Democrats said the wall was racist and xenophobic and wasteful when Trump wanted to build it. Now far left Alum is complaining that Republicans blocked funding for it. Can’t make this stuff up folks.

You already know Harris is not a border Czar. As VP, she worked Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador to reduce emigration from those countries by 98%.

I agree the compromise border bill was flawed.

Tell me what tools Biden had (the VP had none) that he refused to use?

Like PAMan said, maybe he shouldn’t have scrapped the policies that were in place and openly encouraged people to come here illegally in order to appease the progressives.

I do not disagree, however, unless the I-9 documents provided by an employee are obviously fake (and I have seen Green Cards where "United States of America" is misspelled), employers' hands are tied. You have to accept the documentation that is given to you regardless of how suspicious it may be. I have had a client receive a shitload of valid looking work authorization cards where the classifications happened to be "married to a Honduran native who is a US citizen" or some crap like that.  You just have to accept it because it is valid on its face when you compare it to the IDs in the Fed's I-9 manual.

It used to be that SSA would send out No Match Letters to employers with lists of SSNs where the names on the W-2s did not match the federal SSN records. You could not fire the people using the SSNs by law; you just told them they had to either "fix the error" or get you new SSNs. You know who put an end to sending out the No Match Letters? W.

What are "The executive orders that Biden put back into place that reduced the flow of illegal immigration?" Alex.

That would work, but then who would do the jobs?

It could result in a mass voluntary reverse migration. However, the jobs they are doing aren't the kind that kind that can follow them home.

It does make more sense than the Miller/ Trump to attempt a mass deportation starting day one.

*Decriminalize unlawful entry. Hire more administrative law judges to expedite civil hearings.

*Focus criminal law enforcement on smugglers.

*Identify and work with employers who hire illegals. Create a sensible guest worker program.

The legal pathways? Those made a difference.

Give me a break. Go to any home depot in the US and there are a bunch of guys hanging out there looking for day work, none of whom have any papers. They get work. Employers knowingly hire large amounts of illegals. You know it.

That misspelled green card - did they hire they guy? Did the report him to ICE?

This is the point. If you go after the employers, then they will have to suck it up and lobby for better guest worker programs. Until then, they will gladly accept the ability to pay reduced wages.

Not surprised that our resident bellyacher would think the border security bill was "garbage".

I've never said I was against more border wall construction.  I've always thought of it as another tool in the toolbox, to be used strategically with other measures.

The border security/immigration reform deal represented a good faith effort to find a bipartisan path forward.  Of course the legislation had flaws, but it would have been the most sweeping immigration bill in decades, something to build on over time.  It included new emergency border restrictions, major changes to asylum, expanded the use of "alternatives to detention", and authorized funding for new/replacement border wall construction.

Passage of the bill would have demonstrated that the Ds and Rs in Congress can work together to address critical issues, which has been missing over the last 8-10 years.  It would have served as a new starting point for deeper conversation and necessary additional reforms.  The bill had support from the right-leaning Border Patrol agents union and left-leaning Center for American Progress.

Executive level actions are not going to solve the problem.  At best, you would be kicking the can down the road.  And some of those actions would be tied up in the courts for years.  Our immigration system needs a major overhaul, which can only be achieved through congressional action.

I'll say it. The border wall is a dumb waste of money. The only people crawling through the desert are poor people trying to figure out how to get to somewhere they might not get shot at or get a little work. It's a horrible journey fraught with danger. The only people making that journey are people with nothing to lose. Wall isn't going to stop them - it's not some magical barrier.

The bad hombres that Trump worries about are coming in on planes or nice yachts. If you have money it would be trivially easy to get into the US physically. Overstay a tourist visa, boom. The cartels obviously have US operations, most posing as legitimate businesses, who could get visas for their bad hombres posing as people coming in for a work conference on AI research or a John Deere trade show or whatever.

Deterrent measures - walls, punitive criminal punishments - work for people who have something to lose. And they are written by Congressmen at the behest of cops - people who have something to lose so they can't put themselves into the mind of someone with nothing to lose, and write laws that won't work for the population they are trying to control. The result is basically useless.
