The Clinton's violations were very different. Guys like John Huang and Charlie Trie packaged illegal campaign contributions. When they got caught, the Clintons returned the money.

Trump effectively used his own money to kill negative stories that might hurt his campaign. His lawyer and others did the dirty work and there was an elaborate scheme to reimburse them and made it look like legal expenses. Basically, he concealed campaign  expenses by concealing them as legal expenses. That is felony in NY.

Maybe a federal racketeering charge when NY is done?

""I want to discuss proper decorum in my courtroom," Judge Juan Merchan said to Costello,"

It's his courtroom but his comment appears to be a bit stretched.

Wait. The judge thought the defense witness should act like an adult?

And is that a misdemeanor past the statute of limitations ?
And what does Daniels testimony have to do with it ?

Trump's attorneys, for whatever reason, denied the rationale behind the payment.

The allegation is that they violated NY state statute. If there was a statute of limitations argument that was denied, I'm sure it will be taken up if there is an appeal.

The allegation is that they violated state statutes in the commission of a felony.
I don't think that felony gets revealed until the case goes to the jury.
The misdemeanor charges are dead. Tying those to the commission of a felony is what gets around the statute of limitations.
Some have described it as a novel legal theory, but Merchan won't let the former FEC commissioner defense witness to talk much.
Costello wasn't allowed to talk much either.

"Under New York law, falsification of business records is increased from a misdemeanor to a felony by linking that falsification to the “intent to commit another crime and aid and conceal the commission thereof.” "

Ok, I understand.

Wasn't Costello there to controvert Cohen's credibility on certain things? Wasn't he Guiliani's counsel?

Didn't the judge preclude the FEC guy from testifying as it was the jury's job to determine if election laws were broken instead of his opinion?

"Bragg has identified the federal law under which the Southern District charged Cohen, the Federal Election Campaign Act, as a possible “object offense,” that is, the intended or concealed crime that raises the misdemeanor to a felony. Bragg has explained in court filings how FECA also feeds into another potential object offense under New York Election Law § 17-152, which criminalizes conspiring to “promote … the election of any person by unlawful means”—such as, Bragg has suggested, by violating federal election law.
