Second, you have trumpeted giving those slots to Chinese Commies, et al. Let's not forget that foreign countries are not sending their downtrodden to US universities in the name of diversity. They are from the foreign elite or else they wouldn't be able to pay the freight. You want some real diversity? Admit American poor kids, regardless of race.
I don't think it's foreign countries sending anyone to US Universities. It's very rich foreign *parents* sending their kids (you do mention foreign elite, but to clarify, it's the parents doing the sending, not the CCP). My experience is that the parents want to send their kids and by and large want them to end up staying here - granted my experience is sort of self fulfilling because I have so many foreign born co-workers.
"Admit American poor kids, regardless of race."
Sure. Admit all of them. They won't be able to afford to enroll, but hey, admit them anyway. It's a great play - hey, we let your kid in, he just didn't take advantage of the opportunity! Or is your statement..
"Admit American poor kids, regardless of race, and have the taxpayers pay their tuition". If so - count me in.
What I'd prefer to see is some of both. I'm great with the intellectual property theft that happens when foreign kids come here, get an education, and stay. I'd like more opportunities for US Citizens. What that probably implies is a lot more tax dollars towards education, because we'd need more slots to do that. There are 3-4 state schools in Illinois withering on the vine that could become a 3rd campus in the UofI system with the right amount of vision and a good chunk of money.
