This right here makes me believe there actually was a package for Kofi from NIL for slightly over $1 million if he were to come back. His team reportedly was wanting $2 million.

He should have taken that then. I don’t get it really.
Do businesses really think that a Kofi Cockburn will really do anything for their name recognition or sales?

Beyond some token amounts, or just being a pass through donation to help the program keep a guy from leaving early it seems like a waste of money for the business.

If a player like Pack is getting that amount (around $400k/year and $800k for 2 years from one company’s endorsement, plus a car, and I imagine he will get other endorsements as well), I have really little doubt that Kofi’s NIL actually was/could be around the 1 million being speculated. Illinois has the backing of State Farm, Caterpillar, ADM, numerous alumni and boosters such as The Guardians, etc… to think that they couldn’t round up the support to make him a very generous offer.

I understand your sentiment, but Illinois has, seemingly, always acted like a "small market team" if you know what I mean.

I am sorry, but I don't see "worth" having anything to do with it. The ability and willingness to pay market prices do. This does not explain whether Guardians or local captains of industry offered, collectively or singularly, Kofi $1m or $50.

I remain skeptical that Kofi could get $1 Million guaranteed.
Unless it was a group of really stupid donors who were going to pool their money and have him do some minimal PR appearances for show to comply with the rules. Really it is just a front to pay players a salary in such a case. Nobody, or any legit marketing dept really believes Kofi truly would be making a difference in any company’s profit margin.

30 years ago the school via donors would give him a lucrative summer “job” to make sure the astroturf was still green at the practice fields.

Again, if he was told he would get 1M$ he would be a fool to not take it.
I am guessing that lesser players would make some decent pocket money for NIL, but only a few will make serious money from this.

CU is a small market cowtown and nobody in Chicago cares that much about Illinois right now unless they become a true national power.

Saw my first Kofi billboard tonight. Was def ECI af. Some State Farm insurance agent, I think. 

I don’t think there’s much keeping these donors from ponying up tons of money for these guys and finding ways to make it look legit.

I do have to wonder if it will cannibalize donations to the DIA/facilities. No one seems to be discussing that aspect of it.

Champaign might be a small market cowtown but the UI boasts a hell of an alumni base scattered out all over the country in larger, more affluent markets. The Guardians type groups should be making hay with them.
