My dad took us to a game at Wrigley against Giants in the early 1960's. The Giants had Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Marichal. Cubs had Banks, Santo, Williams.

Game was rained out. Talked to some of the players, but someone in charge wouldn't allow autographs.

RIP to Willie Mays. Maybe the greatest ever.
I didn’t get to see him play until 1966, his last big season. After that, 1967-1971 he was still a very good player but not the superstar he once was. I remember the play he made running towards right center fence, jumping higher than Bobby Bonds and crashing in to him and making the catch.
It was sad seeing him the last 2 seasons with the Mets.

If he didn't lose a season and close to another one while he served in the military he may have been the HR record holder and considered the greatest player ever.

Oh, no doubt Candlestick robbing him. He had to learn to hit with power to RF and RCF. No doubt with the things you've mentioned, he would have passed Babe Ruth in HR totals. If you go to Baseball Reference, check his on base percentage even toward the later years with the Giants. Setting up destruction for Willie McCovey.
