Slainte to the Irish, the non-Irish and those who have no idea. 🍻🍻

And from 5 years ago today, a "correspondence" in Nature Medicine.
And a Sunday post from Shellenberger.

"But Lord Vallance, the science minister who was the Government's chief scientific adviser at the time, is accused of ignoring the report, possibly for fear of offending the Chinese or jeopardising research funding."

Pretty big victory lap here, MN. I’m sure there are or will be rebuttals to this, but if this holds, several here owe you an apology.

I seem to recall making a few posts, one just the other day, about the danger of science evangelism and the role money and politics play in ensuring preferred scientific outcomes.

The oddly insistent nature of the pushback against the lab leak theory, as well as the people doing the pushing, always felt like a smoking gun to me. To be fair, in probably the same way Trump insisting it came from the lab felt like a smoking gun in the other direction for the TDS crowd.

I think it is naturally out there but escaped from the Commie Lab, but there still seems to be some dispute within the US government it appears.

We know for sure that intelligence agency assessments are always flawlessly accurate. Their findings are never influenced in the least by politics.

Also, the Daily Mail is a highly respected source, well known for credible, factual, unbiased reporting.

Rasha Alawieh, a physician specializing in kidney transplants and professor at Brown University, also told Customs and Border Protection agents that while visiting Lebanon last month she attended the funeral of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and followed his teachings “from a religious perspective” but not a political one, according to an official report on her interrogation by an immigration officer.

Is the concern regarding the source ? Or this Patrick Vallance ?

Patrick Vallance

From 1986 to 1995, Vallance taught at St George's Hospital Medical School, where his research concentrated on vascular biology and endothelial cell physiology. In 1995, he was appointed a professor at UCL Medical School, and in 2002 he became head of UCL's department of medicine. From 2012 to 2018, he was president of Research and Development (R&D) at the global pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).[4] He served as chairman of the Natural History Museum's board of trustees between 2022 and 2024.[5][6]

In March 2020, as HM Government's Chief Scientific Adviser, Vallance appeared alongside Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, in televised briefings on the COVID-19 pandemic.[7][8] He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 2022 New Year Honours for "services to public health". In July 2024, Vallance was appointed Minister of State for Science, Research and Innovation by Prime Minister Keir Starmer following the Labour Party's victory at the 2024 general election.

Analysis / Bias
The Daily Mail is a known supporter of the Conservatives. They are also one of the pro-Brexit tabloids. According to a Reuters article, the Daily Mail published a controversial headline in response to a Brexit Court ruling criticizing the judges by branding them as ‘enemies of the people.’ According to CNBC, the Daily Mail has also been criticized by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales for publishing fake news articles and “hyped up” headlines and “mastered the art of running stories that aren’t true.” Further, CNBC reported that DMG media responded by saying, “DailyMail.com is the very antithesis of click-bait and hype headlines. We just tell stories better than anyone else.”

tl/dr

It may be just a coincidence that the UK's chief scientific advisor was on 1 of the very 1st calls made, with fellow Brit Farrar and 4 of the Proximal Origin authors but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't.
