Why do we always assume tall Africans (or other foreigners) want to play basketball?
A lot of these kids don’t grow up playing or even watching the game. Their perspective of it is entirely different. Then one day maybe they get tall and they’re whisked away to the USA to become basketball stars.
It would be really fascinating to have guys like Kofi/Oscar give completely honest no-holds-barred interviews on what they think of college basketball as a whole. They’ve got all these people who either have money or want money based on their labor shoving basketball down their throats 24/7 and maybe they just really wanna be accountants or teachers or something?
Sometimes I wonder if Kofi really enjoys playing basketball at this level. I think he does, sometimes. I could also see why he might feel like he’s on a plantation sometimes too.
Obviously that goes to some extent for all college athletes who don’t feel fairly compensated for their athletic contributions, but for most American kids playing at this level is a dream come true. For these overseas guys who didn’t grow up with the game it might feel like someone else’s dream coming true.
