Not the ++ athlete we all want, but his versatility and work ethic should suit him well in the NBA.

It's a grown man's game. They ALL work their ass off.
He should hold a spot for now but for him to stick around he has to get a lot better at pretty much everything.
He has his shot now and it is time to take it.

Tempo gonna Tempo.

And….

Jobu gonna Jobu his ass!

You are just as dumb as Jobu. Which it surprises me to say. What is so out of this world impossible and arrogant about a gut feeling a guy who played for Illinois and is from Chicago might go to the Bulls? If this thought didn’t cross the mind of anyone thinking about Ayo’s potential landing spot they aren’t a very deep thinker. Especially someone from this forum. Ayo figured to be drafted late 1st/2nd round, and the Bulls seem to want versatile players with upside.

It was a fairly obvious fit IMO. Keep in mind, I’m not saying “I was sure he would end up with the Bulls.” That’s a lot different than saying “I had a feeling.” You guys are making a mountain out of a molehill.

Anything that even remotely allows for a dig at me though, I guess. You guys are sad people.

I don’t think that’s true. They don’t all have the same work ethic. He’s gotten better each year in college, no reason to think he’s peaked.

A hunch Ayo might slide to the Bulls was not unreasonable, especially after the Lakers traded their pick.

There were apparently  some interesting picks. I don't have the time or interest level to read the in depth draft analyses, but I followed it more than usual and scanned the coverage. A few things caught my untrained eye:

*Josh Primo  at #12
*Chris Duarte at #13
*Santi Almada at #30

B1G: Banton from NE at #46; Garza fell all the way to 52.  Aaron Henry and Duane Washington not drafted.
“Taking a trip? Where to?”  -“Wherever I end up, I guess. -“Man, I wish I was you." -Well, hang in there.”

Tell me the last time that you actually watched an NBA game?
It is a grown man's game and these guys are playing for their livelihoods. He will not have his parents dictating the roster and his touches anymore.
You think he is something unique in terms of work ethic- you are full of shit.

Yes, Ayo works hard. Yes, he has improved. He became a very good college player. Most guys work hard and improve after 3 years in college. But- after 3 years he still has extremely limited left hand, and is very TO prone. He will have to play off the ball in the NBA. Unfortunately, he cannot create his own shot very well against plus defenders and everybody who guards him in the NBA is better than anybody who guarded him in college.
He also is not a good 3 point shooter. Above average in open court for sure but that is kind of an adjunct. Most guys are fast and can finish.
He will get killed in switches and isos on D in the NBA right now - and they will find him.

Yes he can and will improve. Again- it is their full time job. The question is will it be enough. He is not really a plus athlete. He was late second round or non draft after his soph year. He ended up #38 after his breakout year and workouts. I know for a fact he had his family controlling his pre draft prep - not known development people.  He really dropped from Feb/March. Fact is they question his upside.
I do think the Bulls are a good situation for him. Weak team and not loaded with good guards off the ball on the bench.
I think his biggest upside is defense actually. He has the length and just needs to commit to it like never before.

Its just a different game and level of play. He was very good college player. So is Kofi.
When they start handing out a million dollars for NBA minimum it gets pretty real.
Wish him the best. I am sure he will give it 100%.

I get what you’re doing but there’s a reason he was questioned during the season and it was borne out during the draft. Great college player. We probably relied too heavily on him at times which hurt the team overall. Not a great pro prospect. Won’t be able to overwhelm lesser opponents. I’ve questioned his pro potential for a long time and I’m far from being alone. I said last season that Curbelo would have the best pro career out of the big three. I still stand by that.

Per the norm, Rob brings little to the discussion. That’s all the 2nd round basically is. Players that NBA GMs think have the potential to outplay their draft status. So in essence, the entire 2nd round is drafting for “upside.” 2nd rounders aren’t even expected to make a team in many cases.

Just me, but I'm not going to crap on a guy who had real choices on where to go but still came here. I'll crap on Underachiever and the Scott Weavers of the Illini world, though

I love Ayo but he really didn’t have any better options. He supposedly had an offer from KU but they weren’t seriously recruiting him. It came down to us and a Wake Forest program that’s still floundering.

We definitely aren’t better off without him but he had significant limitations and he wasn’t the same player after he got hurt. It’s kinda funny to think Illinois would have matched up better with Loyola if we’d have sat our two All Americans.

I think that we may not have the same W-L, or high ranking, but I think we might be better prepared for a tournament with more scoring balance, a full time true PG, better 3 point shooting, and improved interior defense options.

The record will be almost identical records imo, if we play Arkansas early on, then I think that will be a good barometer for our season. Big Ten should be basically a 3/4 horse race. Michigan/MSU/Purdue/Ohio State against us.

More balance although a different kind of Alpha dog still running the show.
3 Point shooting may improve, but 2 Point % will go down imo.
Interior Defense will be greatly improved with likes of Payne joining the Paign...
Still quite abit of unknowns outside of main 4 guys...Kofi/Fraz/Belo/Williams.
"We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
