Crate the dog for the dog's own good and yours. The dog will figure it out.
When we first got our current dog we hung a bell on the back door and told him to ring the bell when he needed to go out. Within about a week he was a pro and has never shit in the house.
The dog won't shit in it's own bed. The door doesn't have to be closed all of the time. Just develop a routine for the dog.

Let the dog out, take him outside to do business, preferably in roughly the same spot. Praise him, bring him in and leave the crate door open until it's time to close it. The dog may treat it like it's his house.

I’m the one taking him outside 90% of the time (and it’s been fucking cold!). And I take him outside almost every hour.

Oh, it’s a pattern alright. My son’s mother wanted to get TWO dogs (because she wanted a Frenchie). Good thing that dog wasn’t good with kids otherwise I’d be taking care of that dog, too.
