If Dee Brown had backed out of the championship game for mental health reasons I'd have supported him.  These people don't owe me a damn thing.  Their mental health is infinitely more important than my desire for them to win, which is really seated in my own personal reasons (i.e., I'm a fan of the Illini, or an American). I'm a grown up.

The funny thing is how many people are sitting behind their keyboards calling her weak or selfish.  The girl who at 25 has competed in multiple Olympics, competed through broken bones, a kidney stone, sexual assault perpetrated and covered up by the very infrastructure meant to support her.  SHE is weak and selfish, but the people whose investment in her performance ends at "I wanted her to win for me" are alphas.  Fuckin' nonsense man, some middle school shit.  It's not a coincidence that damn near every athlete of her stature is supporting her, saying they've been through similar things, etc. and the massive majority of complaints about it are coming from keyboard warriors.  Simone Biles is stronger than damn near any of these morons criticizing her, and has proven it time and again.

Let's say she decides, you know what I don't have it today, my head's not in it, but I'm going to go out and compete because if not these idiots will have a field day with me ... and then she gets bronze.  Who are the first people criticizing her performance?

Again, she doesn't owe me anything.  I'm glad she did what she needed to do.  I’m always going to side with the athletes over the grown ass men who pretend the athletes owe them something.

Well, the difference is I'm skeptical that it is a true "mental health" issue versus she screwed up and could not handle the possibility of failure. Could that be a "mental health issue"? I suppose. But then again I think her whining is a disservice to the nut jobs on the Blue Line I see when I go into the office who have "real" mental health issues and aren't making big $ off their fame. Again, Scottie Pippen Migraine 2.0.

It’s not up to you or me to determine “a real mental health issue”.  She doesn’t owe you anything.  If she says she had a mental health issue and didn’t want to participate, good for her - that’s not my call to make in any way.

Not sure why you bring up Pippen’s migraine.  By all accounts he was sick as hell.  And tried to play if I remember right.  The Pippen incident you should be talking about is when the shot got drawn up for Kukoc so Pippen went and pouted on the bench - which is obviously very different from the Biles situation.  She stayed, she supported her teammates, she spoke to them directly about it.

The whole reaction to it is just thinly veiled toxicity about “toughness”, and its bullshit.

Her issues won't cause her to miss a free throw or a broad-jump.  It could cause to land on her head and end up like many of her detractors.  Geez, how about some better context here?

I'll respond to both of you here: there has never been an inkling of any of this from her before. She has a shitty first vault and then this just pops up conveniently enough that she can hide behind it. Just like Scottie Pippen being a whiny bitch because Phil designed the play for Kukoc.

The Olympics is where you make your money. Suck it up, hon. You fucked up one vault. It's ok. No one will hold it against you. Stiffing your teammates is completely different though.

The good news is, since the Pippen event society has grown up a little, mental health has become more important and safe to talk about, and we're moving away from that kind of bullshit.  Thank goodness.

As far as there 'never having been an inkling of this before', that likely speaks to her toughness.  She was literally sexually abused by the very people meant to take care of her body.  She is under enormous pressure that there's no way you or I could possibly understand.  Despite all that, she seems relatively well adjusted and kind - but JFC, who wouldn't have mental health and psychological issues after that?
