Greatest NCAA Tournament Game?
« on: April 05, 2021, 07:08:59 AM »
Of course I have a soft spot for Illinois - Arizona 2005, but it's not that meaningful to anyone except us.

For my money, I've always felt the 1974 NC State - UCLA semifinal was the best I ever saw.  Plenty of star power and historic (ending UCLA's 7 straight title run).

If Gonzaga goes on to win tonight, their win over UCLA might knock 1974 down a notch.  Both teams played at such a high level, trading haymakers back and forth for 45 minutes.  Nobody lost this one.  As one of the announcers said, whoever has the ball last wins.

What's your favorite?

2016 Villanova / North Carolina Championship.

That's a great choice, especially since Carolina was the loser.

How about the Jimmy V game in 1983 over the slamma jamma team in the Pit?

In no particular order:

#1 Georgetown 50, #16 Princeton 49. Until 2018 UMBC's epic blowout win over Virginia, this was the closest a #16 seed had beaten a #1 seed during March Madness. The Ivy Leaguers had 2 shots in the final 15 seconds to win the game but both were snuffed out by future NBA star Alonzo Mourning. The NCAA had been considering eliminating the automatic bid champions from smaller conferences received to the Big Dance, but this game effectively put an end to that line of stupidity.

Phi Slamma Jamma -- IMO, 1982-83 Houston was probably the best team never to win it all -- somehow losing to NC State in the 1983 NCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball Tournament Championship Game. Okay, the Cougars bricked too many FTs even with Olajuwon & Drexler.

Ohio State 75, Cal 55 in the 1960 NCAA Championship. Just a friendly reminder Illinois fans that the Buckeyes have won a NC in men's basketball. Probably should have won 1 of the next 2 championships, but lost both games to Cincinnati -- which didn't have Oscar Robertson.

Ray remembers

I remember Lucas, Havlicek, and Siegfried from the NBA. Knight and DeVoe as college coaches.

I do remember our 1963 team that lost to eventual NCAA champ Loyola in the tournament. It's pretty hazy before that.

I was in SA for the Final Four that year. Me and my best friend had tickets for the championship game but got wasted on Patron, and never made it the stadium.
"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.
