I mean Whitman and Underwood aren’t going after mid major guys, they are trying to get proven coaches from successful high majors to essentially make a lateral (at best) move for a pay raise. Florida, Oregon and Creighton have all been better programs than Illinois the past 15 years or so. We poached Frazier (an alum, granted) from an ACC program that’s made the tourney four of the last five seasons. Va Tech is eying a high school coach to replace him.

I wouldn't call Frazier a poach or stealing a top guy.
I see him as pretty much a very safe B level hire. Not bad, but nothing extraordinary really.
The alum angle is of some value I guess.
Does not address the need we have for a high level recruiter.
Others may certainly disagree.

By other coaches??
By some players who left?

Or just the fact that two asst guys left and that it is known at least a couple guys are not interested?

I mean we literally stole the top guy (associate head coach) from an ACC program with a much better 6-8 year recent history than our own, albeit a lower ceiling.

Frazier’s resume is objectively better than Chin’s was coming in. And that’s who he’s replacing. I don’t think anyone thought it was an extraordinary hire, but at least on paper it looks to be a solid and safe one.

I think the perception of the hire isn’t that exciting because 1) It is Chester Frazier, the much maligned former Illini player who was emblematic of the program’s meteoric fall from grace and 2) He cut his coaching teeth with Bruce Weber.

I have no idea how well Frazier will recruit but they’re clearly trying to get a proven high level recruiter to fill OA’s spot.

Don't see any reason why stud recruits in the region and their parents won't like and get along with Chester. He had to play thru that period of depressing Weber ball, he was actually a bright spot later in his career and I don't hold that against him.

I am sure he will be hard worker and good team player.
I can also pretty much guarantee you that when OA and Chin were known to be leaving nobody was thinking, "Oh let's get Chet Frazier!"

I don't think anyone was paying much attention to him.

I hope it works out.  He has no track record of being lead on Top 100 recruits.
I am sure he invests 100% when they get there.

No, but the people who get paid a lot to do this did. And did it quickly.

If you had someone hand you a stack of AC resumes with no names on them, Frazier’s would look pretty damn good. Made the Top 30 under 30. Has some coached some guys that made it to the league. Been in the tourney more often than not, with some tourney success including the round of 8 appearance.

The fans at VaTech really liked him and thought he was doing great. I mean compare his resume to Chin’s resume coming in. Nebraska? Col St? UIC, MIF? Chet has coached like 7-8 P5 NCAA tourney teams in the last decade.

If some other guy with the exact same resume got the job I think people would be way more excited about the hire especially considering he’s not even going to be our #1 recruiting guy.

The people that get paid a lot to do this also brought us Gentry who we are now trying to foist on someone else. And those same people have swung and missed on our top picks.

If you want to do the blind resume thing, fine. I would have passed unless it was for a third spot which we seem to have Alexander penciled in for. Another gym rat guy who has not really recruited anybody.

Frazier had 10 years at P5 schools. No Top 150 recruits. Coached under Clownshoes for 7 years who is a punchline.

You don’t win without talent. We just had our best regular season in 16 years. We had four Top 50 guys and a Top 100 senior in rotation.

I am sure he will be OK, just not as enthused about it as others.

The obvious answer is that guys who have options aren't scrambling to take these jobs.

They know O and Chin professionally. They have differing degrees of personal relationship with them.

Why do they not want the jobs O and Chin left? Probably for the same reasons O and Chin wanted out.

Chester shouldn't be lumped in, in this analysis. He was working for a guy even older than Brad, with even less high major experience than Brad. Maybe things are looking up in Blacksburg, but they took over for Buzz, who'd stocked the cupboard and gone to three straight tourneys before he bolted.

Chester has seen a coach succeed, at first, with a previous coach's recruits. Twice.

Champaign is comfortable for him and gets his wife closer to her friends and family. It was an easy choice.

Good analysis Rob.
I hope he does well here.

I think we are in some ways seeing an analogous process to when we look for head coaches.

We don't have any history of poaching top assistants from high major programs.

No, but the people who get paid a lot to do this did. And did it quickly.

Just because they get paid a lot does not mean they are good at their jobs.

Tim Beckman was hired by people who get paid a lot to do this. Imbecile Judy got hired by highly paid sanitation executives to pick up OA's garbage, and look how he screwed that up.
