Champaign as expected has about 50% higher average wind speed than Milwaukee so for all intents and purposes they might as well be the same. The lake effect actually keeps cities like Chicago and Milwaukee warmer throughout the winter than further inland.

Champaign averages 20 inches of snow per year.

Milwaukee averages 45 inches of snow per year.

I would expect lake effect to be mostly downwind from the lake. I suppose Benton Harbor gets more.

But holy shit on 45 inches. That's the same as Minneapolis, which seems to have snow on the ground from November to April.

People on the west side of the lake don’t really understand what lake effect snow is. They talk about it all the time, but it mostly only happens on the east side.

That’s not because Minneapolis gets more snow, it’s because it often doesn’t get warm enough for the snow to melt in Minnesota.

Milwaukee is a shit hole.  Went up there a few years ago for a brewers game and stayed a few miles from the ball park at a holiday Inn.  That night someone shot at the hotel and hit a window and numerous amount of cars were broken into in the parking lot.
