Wasn’t he basically the runner-up to Weber getting the Illini job in ‘03?  Think about all of the pain and suffering we could have avoided had we just hired him. Seems like there’s all the evidence in the world we’d have continued to be a top 20 program.

Fittingly, it parallels what I’ve been saying for years. Weber and Groce’s biggest failures wasn’t missing on 5 star players. It was missing on 3-4 star players we could have had that we passed over.

"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

Groce had about 20 experienced seniors and started BIG10 play at Md after a good non-con.
We lost by what seemed like 50.
Still hiding behind innuendo and practicing the art of ommision.

Didn't Altman want to bring all of his assistants and we said no??

That was smart.

I heard a story that was something like that. Keeping McClain was a prereq (and frankly would have been dumb to replace him).

Altman also flaked hard on Arkansas so ?

Now this is a classic Tempo34 threadstarter.
Mark Carman: "The Whitlock!...Caleb Williams failed Wayne Whitlock." Been told I need to take my dick out my mouth so maybe I "wont [sic] sound like such a fucking faggot all the time[.]"

Tempo: "PAMan is a pot stirrer and agent provocateur"

Good point. My memory is hazy, but didn't he accept the Arkansas job and then back out??

Altman was fired from Kansas State for losing too much.

Not really what the fan base was looking for in 2003.

Of course, they weren't pining for an awkward dork, either.

Wow.  Ok, guys.  I'm gonna try to hang in there.  But thread starters like these make it very difficult.

I mean, what's the fucking point? Jesus Christ, are we going to be pining for Dana Altman now, and what could have been?

ikr, shit got me like this

Altman's a good coach.   Don't think he's going anywhere else.  Eugene's a tough place to leave.  His teams are mostly positionless, athletic, and play hard and fast.  It's an entertaining brand and reminds one at times of our 89 team.

He has his system running pretty well. 5 guys averaged double figures which is hard to prep for.

I was in my final semester at UI when Self left. As a lifetime fan of Illinois basketball, I vividly remember the coaching search. I remember pulling into the bookstore that is now Binny’s and listening to coaching talk and being excited about what Thad Matta brought to the table. He became my guy at that moment. I was ok with Weber as a backup. But man Altman was just a complete non-starter at that time.

But...with the advantage of 20/20 hindsight, you’re right. Again.

Jobu going ballistic over this thread: mission accomplished.
"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

Altman was almost a decade removed from KSU at that time.

Oh, so that's okay then. The fan base would love it because, although he'd been fired from the Big 8, he was 175-100 in the Missouri Valley and had just finished in second place behind Bruce Weber.
