New DC.

Not sure what to make of it other than....incredible past records, great achievements on those levels, didn't want to ever be a HC again. The defensive rankings totally makes this an outstanding hire imo. Whitman again strikes GOLD I think.

Not ever being a defensive coordinator before is kind of concerning, especially with implementing a whole new 3-3-5 system, but I’ll trust Bielema…
I didn’t know that. Thanks!

And he's 60 and quit as a head coach because he didn't want to recruit or something?

The defenses at Montana haven't been that good the last 2 years but I'm just looking at yards and touchdowns allowed. The defense was ranked 50th, giving up 50 tds, in FCS last year in scoring defense. 3 teams were next at 41. 9 tds is quite a disparity.

Montana has been a good FCS program for a while and my first thought was a good hire.
But yep, no DC experience seems odd and saying the announcement would be after the Super Bowl also seems odd if you're going to sign a guy from an FCS school.

It’s about the Jimmy’s and Joe’s, not the X’s and O’s.

How many games did Montana play?

He didn't have specific DC experience but he installed his defense at Montana. He learned the 3-3-5 from Rocky Long at SDSU when he was ST and associate HC there. All of his non HC experience has been ST and defense.

Bret Underwood had a verbal commitment from a plan A, who backed out. Bobby Hauk is plan B..

Maybe Tyler can be OC for the football team too.
