Hmm. Hear me out LK.
I'm a D1 basketball player. Not the strongest guy in the world, but have D1 talent and can knock down some shots.
I get here and this maniac gets my ass in the weight room and pushes me to my limit. I get strong. But I'm sore as fuck all the time. My shot is harder to maintain because I'm sore and my arms are bigger that I'm used to.
Now, I miss a bunch of jumpers and I can't get my confidence back. Any swagger and advantage I felt like I once had slowly disappears.
Feasible?
Certainly could be. It's complex as fuck is my guess.
Shooting is technique and part mental.
Either of those things goes off or is not present and you are fucked. And it gets tougher as you go up the ladder.
The guy I loved watching was Plummer.
Great form, footwork, quick release, and believed in himself no matter what. Always thought the next one was going down.
Great shooters have that mindset and good fundamental technique ingrained.
If you watch a game in person at court level you realize how difficult it must be to keep it all together as a shooter facing a tough close out against players with great quickness and length. High D1 makes the court look small.
I watch a lot of D3 BB locally in person for fun and even at that level marvel at how tough it must be.
Players actually might get better looks in NBA I think because of elite spacing, passing, positioning, kick outs and ball reversals and they all get world class teaching on shooting. A guy like Ayo with really below average technique is provided open catch and shoot looks to step into and learns to take the shots he can make. He is good enough to stay in the league.
Not everybody can create their own space and shoot off the bounce like Curry or Clark or Lillard.
Great technique holds up under pressure and builds confidence and it becomes circular and self affirming.
We have guys who were obviously successful at various levels but are struggling now. Not getting clean looks, taking lower percentage more contested shots, and their release is maybe not quick enough or breaks down at this level.
We play Iowa soon. Watch Sanford and Dix.
Pure form and a lot of confidence.
We have a lot more talent overall but nobody like those two.
