Weber and Groce were not producing NBA players, but we stuck with them for 14 years.

Producing them? I mean, NBA players, for the most part are what they are before they get to college. Weber and Groce weren't recruiting them. I mean, Groce identified some, but then failed to get them, and even they were fringe. Remember the Illijah bullshit? Lol, that was hilarious.

These fucking guys don't make these guys into NBA players.

He was way higher than your 5th choice lol. But whatever.

No he was not. I even specifically referred to him as no higher than a 4th or 5th option. And at that time we couldn’t attract quality candidates.
"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

At that time Romar was still a high end recruiter. I think he even had the #1 overall pick on his roster or just drafted. We couldn’t get any respectable candidates at that time. I felt worst case scenario we could at least see some NBA players come through Champaign. And they were mostly 1st rounders IIRC.

I remember my posts on Romar well. I specifically said he would be my 4th or 5th option if we struck out elsewhere. He was still a very good recruiter and we’d have at least a chance to stumble into a good team or two. No one besides the Webers and the Groce’s of the world wanted this job then.

That was back when there was talk of us hiring Simeon’s coach…

God damn, man

We hired John Groce, and he gave us the worst 5 year period most of us have seen in our lifetimes. Romar would not have been worse.

At the time, Romar had a 5 Star recruit about every year (something we couldn’t land in Champaign) and he was in the tourney most years. We could have done worse. And did.

My point was Romar was recruiting at a good level and was regularly producing real NBA players. Not just 10 day contract guys from time to time. I thought if he can get 5 stars to Washington he should be able to do it in Champaign.
