These get twisted a lot but there was poor leadership from the Democrats, period. They tried some sort of "I trust Fauci, not Trump" spin here, but the vaccine wasn't being approved by Trump, it was the FDA and the CDC, and they had shown a willingness not to let Trump push them around.

There was no electoral calculus of merit here. Saying "I'm very excited that we've developed a vaccine and that the Trump administration gave Moderna, J&J, and Pfizer added resources to make it happen and supported the FDA/CDC in testing and approval" would not have lost an election. There were zero undecideds.

Then again there are a trivial amount of undecideds on taking a vaccine, so the whole drama is meaningless

Those three are about as poor a sample set for the US population as any.

Trump was president when masking was a thing, yet the liberals wore masks and the Trumpists protested the masks
State rules very closely followed the party holding the Governor's mansion, and compliance mirrored at a county level with those voting for Biden more closely following protocols

As crazy as Trump seems, his base is crazier and he follows the base, not the other way around
