I was wrong to laugh at Custard (McCaskeys!)

Custard has famously railed on Bears ownership and I mocked him for it, and I'm here to admit that he's in large part right for reasons I hadn't really contemplated at the time. Yes, the McCaskeys are notoriously cheap (although they've shown they will at least spend on players for the most part). And I don't think the McCaskeys are meddling into the football operations (also for the most part). What I hadn't considered is that ownership won't pay for coaching and won't go the extra mile to put a winner on the field.

I'm not at all convinced that Poles had the freedom to move on from Eberflus last year. As I've said many times, if you're "looking to make a case for Eberflus you could." And I'm sure George and Ginnie were. They've never doled out big money for coaching and that is clearly still an ownership trait that holds the franchise back. You can't convince me that George and Ginnie were on board with paying Flus and his staff a couple years' worth of salary plus bringing in a new highly paid coach. Wasn't gonna happen.

While I don't think ownership is making much in the way of football decisions, they're pretty clearly still hamstringing the franchise. When I heard they were interviewing head coaching candidates before GMs I thought "uh oh." Flus totally strikes me as a McCaksey hire because they love meek coaches who won't rock the boat.

Probably forgetting some things I wanted to highlight, but Custard, YOU WERE RIGHT. The McCaskeys are still a pretty big problem. Was hopeful maybe we could fluke our way into a good run (as they have a couple of times), but it's a tall order.

Thanks for the shoutout. I don’t know exactly where the dysfunction lies within the organization—I have kind of quit caring— but it’s been clear for a while that the Bears don’t possess the organizational excellence that other franchises do. They have in fact become very pre-Ricketts Cub-like.

Really wish MiniDitka was here to illustrate my AOTCness.

Part of it I would think stems from the fact that the McCakseys aren’t “wealthy” outside of the Bears. The Bears ARE the family business. But yes, they clearly still operate like a small-market baseball franchise in many ways.

It’s said that the family is pretty equally split on whether or not to sell when Ginnie passes; which ain’t happening. She will outlive Keith Richards.

Also true, pretty astonishing that a family whose only real business is football don’t know a whole lot about football; or the league their patriarchal figure created. The Rooneys and Hunts have figured it out.

Exactly. There are reasons certain organizations find ways to be good to great more often than not, despite all the rules aimed at leveling the playing field. The Bears are mediocre to bad more often than not, and have been most of my life. The common denominator is the people at the top.

Ha, I like the addition to the sig. You deserve that one. I fell victim to ThePAMan Complex thinking the Bears could overcome their coaching.

Like with all businesses whether you want to admit it or not, it always starts at the top

The final decision makers have the most power and influence over an organization, and the Bears ones are complete fucking losers with clearly no clue how to run a successful NFL franchise

Sounds like a Score host or Score caller finally resonated with Tempo.

Could have been that. No way Tempo came up with all of that on his own.

The fact that Your Guy (until they decided to dump Fields) Eberlose still has a job and spoke to the media today tells you all you need to know about the McCaskeys.
