Illinois to KY is not an apples-to-apples comparison.  Illinois can hire an up and comer like Bill Self back in the day.  KY isn't doing that unless the guy is a former player.

Nope, I think UK is typically going to be a bigger draw for coaches than Illinois is.  Which is why I find it so funny that you think we’d do so much better than they did in our coaching search in the same situation.

The bluest blood program targeted the best coaches in the game, got turned down by all of them, and settled for their 5th choice who’s never won a tournament game.  But Illinois would do better if their coach left.

Nice strawman. I said they are not analogous and don't swim in the same pond. KY either goes after top tier coaches,  which Underachiever is not one of them, or former players. They are not looking at Underachiever or the Latest Tournament Flash In The Pan like John Groce. What happened to KY has absolutely nothing to do with Illinois searching for a new coach, like a young up and coming coach, in the event Underachiever went to Kansas State.

So yes that's true that 3/5 years they have finished ahead of UK, but over that span, BYU average final KP ranking is 37.2 and UK's is 26.8.

I think there's a reasonable chance Pope ends up as being a good hire, sometimes people figure it out when they have more resources etc.  But there'll be a lot of pressure, a lot of rebuilding to do, and he has no high-level success to point to really.  Certainly to go from Hurley/Drew/Wright/Donovan as your primary targets to getting a dude who's never won a tournament game is something, our fans would riot and we are not UK.

I mean still, that's pretty impressive considering the limited recruiting pool you have at a place like BYU compared to Kentucky

As I mentioned, I think Pope is a solid coach with a chance at being a good hire.  Obviously people would lose their minds if we made a hire like that just like UK fans are though.

It’s a long way off from Billy Donovan and Jay Wright that’s for sure.
